Trump Can’t Drain the Swamp. Biden’s Protecting the Swamp Creatures.

Trump came into Washington in 2017, promising to “drain the swamp.” He failed.

The fault was partly his and partly the extent to which swamp creatures have had 140 years to embed themselves in the mud. This article does a good job of explaining how and why.

The article also explains how Joe Biden’s staff is working overtime (Joe hardly works at all) to make sure Trump will fail again if he is elected to a second term in 2024.

Trump came to Washington after a successful career as a property developer and reality TV show host. His New York-style management skills might have served him well in the Big Apple (“You’re fired!”), but they don’t work at all in Washington, DC.

Government bureaucrats can’t be fired for the most part because of the Civil Service protections enacted by the Pendleton Act of 1883. As with most progressive bright ideas, the Pendleton Act backfired spectacularly. The idea of protecting government bureaucrats from being fired was to insulate them from political pressure and the turnover of the old spoils systems where each new administration would fire their predecessors and hire their cronies.

The problem was that bureaucrats bring their politics with them. Once they know they can’t be fired, they implement their ideologies without fear of punishment. Progressives and Democrats have always understood this better than Republicans. As a result, we have decades of progressive ideologues embedded in important government agencies (FBI, CIA, SEC, DOJ, EPA, DOE, and many more) who are implementing radical agendas and cannot be removed.

Trump thought he could fire anyone he wanted. He could not have been more wrong.

Trump even bungled the relatively small number of positions he could control. Who appointed the neo-fascist FBI Director Christopher Wray? It was Trump. Who appointed the U.S. Attorney in Delaware who gave Hunter Biden the sweetheart plea bargain and let the statute of limitations run on more serious crimes? It was Trump. Who appointed the lame-brained Attorney General Jeff Sessions? It was Trump. Why didn’t Trump fire Anthony Fauci after the first meeting?

Between the inability to fire existing bureaucrats and Trump’s bungled appointments, it’s no wonder the Deep State walked all over Trump from the RussiaGate Hoax to the border wall that was never built.

Can a new president do better? Biden is out to make sure that can’t happen. He’s expanding the number of bureaucrats covered by the Pendleton Act. This will make it even harder to fire bureaucrats and enable more government employees to undermine the work of a new administration.

The swamp is not being drained. It’s doubling down.
