The Nigel Farage Case Deserves One Last Look. This Could Happen To You.
We’ve written a lot about the Nigel Farage case over the past few weeks. Farage was the leader of the UK Independence Party (UKIP) and a member of the European Parliament (MEP). He was the single most important figure in the effort for the UK to leave the European Union (EU) in 2016.
It’s fair to say he is loved by the right and hated by the left, but that’s just how politics goes. (Full disclosure: Nigel is a friend of mine. We’ve had dinner abroad and I’ve been a guest on his podcasts. He’s brilliant, a true gentleman, and one of the nicest guys I’ve ever met).
Farage had his bank accounts at Coutts, one of the oldest banks in the UK and well-known as bankers to the royal family. Yet, that old school polish is a bit of a marketing façade today. Coutts is owned by National Westminster Bank (NatWest) one of the largest banks in the world and is 38% owned by the UK government.
Recently, Farage was informed that his bank accounts at Coutts were being forcibly closed. He was offered no explanation. He tried opening accounts at other banks, only to be told they would not accept his business. He was close to leaving the UK, because it’s impossible to live in a country where you do not have credit cards, debit cards, cheques or other financial channels.
In the end, Farage filed a petition similar to what we would call a Freedom of Information Act request. He received the internal Coutts files on his case. They were shocking.
He was being called “xenophobic and a racist” on no evidence except that he was friends with Donald Trump. It became clear that Farage was a victim of the “diversity, equity and inclusion” jihad. It was said that Farage’s views did not align with Coutts’s “values” that appeared to be nothing more than an arbitrary bundle of left-wing cliches.
Fortunately, some justice has been done in this case. The CEO of NatWest was forced to resign. The CEO of Coutts resigned also. The BBC is under scrutiny for reporting defamatory claims against Farage that turned out to have been leaked by Coutts and NatWest.
Members of Parliament have taken up Farage’s cause, which is really about free speech versus censorship and the right to have access to the banking system.
Farage will come out fine (after a tough battle). But what about the other victims of this scam who don’t have Nigel’s resources and allies? If they can do this to Nigel Farage, they can do it to you and me. And they probably will.
