Past The Point Of Forgiveness. No Turning Back For The Jews.

There are plenty of hardline Israelis who are ready for war with Hamas in Gaza and will do what it takes to destroy Hamas both politically and militarily in response to the recent atrocities. But it’s also not unusual to find moderate Jews around the world who have not favored the hardline approach and who have opposed the Netanyahu government.

Many of these Jews routinely vote for Democrats in the U.S., even though the Democrats are largely pro-Palestinian and the Republicans from Nixon to Trump have been the greatest supporters of Israel.

Trump never gave tens of billions of dollars in cash and gold to Iran the way Obama and Biden did. That money is then used by Iran to support Hamas and Hezbollah. That background on moderate Jews is what makes this article so interesting.

It was written by Ilan Benjamin, who was a cousin of Daniel Pearl, an investigative journalist for The Wall Street Journal. Pearl was kidnapped and beheaded by Islamists in Karachi, Pakistan in 2012. The immediate reaction of Benjamin and his family to Pearl’s death was forgiveness.

They are self-described progressive Jews. They established the Daniel Pearl Foundation that offers fellowships and cross-cultural music events. The family worked hard to promote goodwill with Palestinian neighbors in Israel. Even after the bus bombings of the Second Intifada (2000-2005), Benjamin maintained his idealism and hopes for peace.

Not anymore.

After the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, something snapped. Benjamin has no more room for forgiveness and no more hope for peace with the Palestinians. He’s a member of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) reserves and is ready to go to war.

My point is not to judge Benjamin’s prior progressive attitude or his current militancy. My point is to show how extreme the events of October 7 actually were, and how a radical change in attitudes is emerging as a result. This new attitude is part of what will ensure Israel and Hamas are in for a long war.
