Nigel Farage Is the Only UK Leader Speaking Honestly About Ukraine

The UK general election took place on July 4 even as Americans were celebrating their independence from the UK. The election was an enormous victory for Labour and the worst defeat for the Conservative Party (Tories) in their history.

Labour received 34% of the vote and secured 412 seats (out of a total of 650 seats) or 63% of the Parliament, an overwhelming majority. The Tories received 24% of the vote and captured only 121 seats or 19% of the total. The UK has a multi-party system with twelve parties receiving at least one seat in Parliament.

Things went so poorly for the Tories that even the Liberal Party got 12% of the vote and took 72 seats (11% of the total) for their best showing since 1923. The newly created Reform UK Party (led by Nigel Farage) gathered 14% of the vote and picked up 5 seats in Parliament, about 1% of the total. (Under the UK’s first past-the-post system, the percentage of seats gained does not necessarily correspond to the percentage of total votes). Farage himself captured a seat in Clacton and will become a member of Parliament for the first time.

Things were so bad for the Tories that a number of their leaders and Cabinet Ministers lost their seats, including Penny Mordaunt (Leader of the House of Commons), Liz Truss (former Prime Minister) and Grant Shapps (Defense Secretary). It was a wipeout for the Tories.

There were other anomalies. Sir Keir Starmer, the Labour leader and new Prime Minister, kept his seat. But he won by fewer votes than he received in the last general election.

There were many explanations for the Tory defeat, including a failure to deliver on tax cuts, inflation, slow growth, high interest rates and outrageous housings costs. After 14 years in power, it may simply have been the case that UK voters were tired of the Tories.

Still, one explanation has not been mentioned in the mainstream media but could be among the most powerful factors in the outcome. The UK under Boris Johnson, Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak have been among the biggest warmongers in the world when it comes to the War in Ukraine.

Boris Johnson personally blew up the best chance for peace by threatening Ukrainian President Zelensky when he reached a tentative peace deal with the Russians in March 2022. Truss and Sunak continued the steady flow of cash and weapons to Ukraine that have resulted in 500,000 dead Ukrainians and have left Russia on the verge of victory.

Nigel Farage is the only prominent UK politician who has spoken out against the war and urged the parties to come to the peace table. Farage’s critics accuse him of being a “Putin stooge” but that’s far from the truth.

Farage is highly critical of Putin, but also understands the folly of war and the fact that Ukraine is a lost cause, and their best option is to come to terms with Russia. He understands that Russia may have started the war, but they were provoked for 14 years by the U.S., UK and their NATO allies.

Perhaps it’s no coincidence that Farage’s party outperformed expectations while pro-Ukraine Starmer underperformed, and the Tory warmongers were wiped out. UK voters may be as tired of the war as they are of Tories.
