Here’s The Short List for Trump’s VP Pick… Maybe
With so much attention being paid to Biden’s mental and physical incapacity and the infighting among Democrats about whether Biden should stay or go and who would replace him if he quits the race, observers can be forgiven for losing sight of what’s going on in Republican circles.
The Republican convention begins today and runs through Thursday. Donald Trump has the nomination locked up, but the choice of Trump’s vice presidential candidate is still a mystery.
Trump loves suspense and is a master at creating it. You may know the nominee by the time you read this, but it’s also likely that Trump will keep the name under wraps until tomorrow just to keep the suspense going.
All of the candidates for VP have already been vetted by opposition research experts and professionals background checkers. If you’re on the list, you’ve passed the audition.
Allowing for the fact that Trump loves surprises and can be mercurial in his decisions, here’s the short list as of Monday morning: J. D. Vance (senator from Ohio), Marco Rubio (senator from Florida), Doug Burgum (governor of North Dakota) and Tim Scott (senator from South Carolina). Other names have been on the list from time to time but have been crossed off for various reasons.
Kristi Noem was a contender, but she was eliminated when it was disclosed that she shot her puppy at point blank range. Ben Carson is well regarded but not the most dynamic campaigner. Tulsi Gabbard would have been a good fusion choice, but her views on abortion were probably too much for the Republican Party to support. Elise Stefanik is an up-and-comer, but probably still a bit too young for the role (she just turned 40). Still, she has a bright future ahead of her.
Of the names still on the list, we hear that Trump is not thrilled with J. D. Vance’s beard. Burgum brings nothing to the ticket because his home state of North Dakota is small in population and solidly in the Trump column. Tim Scott is well-liked but is not very energetic or exciting on the campaign trail. That leaves Marco Rubio as the favorite.
Still, with Trump, the truth is you just never know.
