Hamas Atrocities Are So Grave, We Still Cannot Comprehend It All
The scope of the Hamas atrocities that took place over the course of the October 7 – 8 attack on Israel are so grave and so extensive they can barely be comprehended. I hesitate to describe them in any detail.
Specific accounts are readily available from most mainstream media. But it’s too much to gloss over the fact that the atrocities included murder, beheadings, rape, mutilation, desecration of dead and wounded bodies, kidnapping, torture and worse. It was the largest single slaughter of Jews since the final days of the Holocaust.
Above all, the civilians were not collateral damage in an attack on the military. The civilians were the targets.
Gruesome murders of innocent civilians were the entire point of the attack. As bad as the specifics are, it’s important to put this in a broader context.
We have to consider the anti-Semitic outbursts from students at formerly great schools like Harvard, NYU, Penn, and Columbia. (I say “formerly great” because it’s now clear these schools have debased their reputations with affirmative action, anti-Semitism, anti-White racism, and cowardice by administrators who refuse to condemn any of the lunacy. Disclosure: I have degrees from Penn and NYU. I got a fine education in the 1970s and early 1980s, but those schools are nothing to be proud of these days).
The rot runs deeper, including Joe Biden’s release of $6 billion to Iran just days before the attack, and the anti-Semitic demonstrations popping up all over the world. There’s no one better to provide the detail and perspective we need at a time like this than Victor Davis Hanson.
His latest article, one of many on the subject of U.S. decadence and cultural decline, is badly needed at a time like this. Hanson goes beyond Israel to consider Ukraine, Turkey, Qatar, Mexico and the entire nexus of anti-Israeli left-wing animus and outright assault on what’s left of democracy and civil society.
Hanson’s analysis doesn’t make the bad news any easier to take, but it does perform a valuable service in explaining how atrocities like this can happen while a large part of the left-wing world is cheering them on.
