Government And Big Tech Join Hands To Censor Those Who Disagree
Social media efforts to censor views that don’t conform to left-wing orthodoxy are well-known. Whether it’s Twitter, Facebook, Google, Instagram, Tik-Tok or any of the others, the playbook is well worn.
Targets of Big Tech censorship can be de-platformed. You can have your media posts “tagged” with warning labels about “misinformation.” You can be “shadow-banned” (you’re posting to social media, but your posts are not being transmitted or seen by the larger audience).
You can lose tens of thousands of followers for no apparent reason. You can be targeted by a mob of bots and trolls who load up your timeline with insults, threats, or worse.
If you say vaccines don’t work (true), you’re a target. If you say masks don’t work (also true), you’re a target.
I’ve personally experienced some of these tactics; it’s all in the game. We also know that the government is involved in censorship of various kinds.
The FBI puts Biden’s political enemies in leg irons and frog marches them out of public places in humiliating circumstances on flimsy charges. (I’m a lawyer. I’ve represented clients who were threatened with arrest. We meet with authorities immediately and either mitigate the threat or arrange a quiet voluntary appearance before a magistrate. Public arrests are never necessary for non-violent, first-time offenses. It’s just a publicity stunt by the Biden Department of Justice).
Still, the government has to achieve censorship by intimidation through the legal process. They cannot censor directly because of the First Amendment. Now we learn that the government is circumventing the First Amendment by working hand-in-glove with Big Tech.
As described in this article, the Department of Homeland Security has a direct portal to Facebook (and other social media platforms) to supply social media with a target list and instructions on whom to censor.
Of course, trashing the First Amendment is not that easy. If the government and Big Tech work together, not only is the government violating the First Amendment, but Big Tech itself can be held liable for violations because they’re acting as an agent of the government when they follow orders.
It will take a while for this type of censorship to be ended. Lawsuits are already in the works. More will follow.
Twitter has moved to the good side after Elon Musk’s takeover; he’s cleaning out the rot as fast as he can. When the Republicans win the election tomorrow, they’ll control Congress in 2023 and hold hearings that will shine a harsh light.
Change takes time. In the meantime, it’s good for Americans to know just how corrupt the government and Big Tech actually are.
