Elites Are Taking Away Your Free Speech
The effort to eliminate free speech in the United States has grown to shocking proportions. These efforts are so extensive that the elites don’t even try to hide it anymore.
Before considering this phenomenon, it’s helpful to look at what the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution actually says. It reads: “Congress shall make no law … abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.”
That’s it. It says, “no law.”
It does not say you can eliminate speech you don’t like. It does not say you can eliminate speech that criticizes your party or policies. It does not say you can eliminate speech that is just plain wrong. It doesn’t even say you can eliminate so-called hate speech, recognizing that a lot of what is called hate speech is not actually hateful, it’s just a useful pejorative for speech that the elites don’t like.
Some speech is wrong, and some speech is hateful. The remedy has always been more speech not less. Experts and opponents are free to point out when a statement or story is wrong. Good people have always come forward to condemn hate speech and offer a better way to be.
The remedy for wrongful speech is not less speech, it’s more. And when speech is defamatory or libelous, the law allows damages to be recovered by injured parties.
Again, the solution is not to stifle speech; it’s to offer damages as a way to deter it or at least help the targets of defamation. None of this matters to the elites.
Tim Walz, the Democratic nominee for vice president has said that some speech should be banned. The White House has worked directly with social media platforms (including Facebook and Google) to deplatform or suppress those who spoke up about fake vaccines, useless masks, destructive lockdowns and the Green New Scam. The critics were right in every case, but they were the ones shut down by the elites.
Now comes former U.S. senator, presidential candidate and climate czar John Kerry to continue the attack on free speech. In a recent address, Kerry said that the First Amendment was an impediment to stopping people from believing the “wrong” things.
Kerry said, “You know, there’s a lot of discussion now about how you curb those entities in order to guarantee that you’re going to have some accountability on facts, etc. But look, if people only go to one source, and the source they go to is sick, and you know, has an agenda, and they’re putting out disinformation, our First Amendment stands as a major block to be able to just, you know, hammer it out of existence.”
So, there it is. If you disagree with John Kerry on climate change, he wants to “hammer” you out of existence. Thank goodness we still have the First Amendment so we can shine a light on evil fascists like John Kerry.
