Fantasy Can Rule in The Short-Run but Reality Always Wins in The End
Politics, markets and life in general are more and more a contest between reality and the alternatives to reality including narratives, propaganda, and sheer fantasy.
Here’s a short list of dominant narratives with the reality shown in parenthesis: Ukraine is winning the war; (they’re not). The U.S. economy is coming in for a soft landing; (there’s no such thing. Get ready for a recession). The U.S. border with Mexico is secure; (there is no border). China will overtake the U.S. economy; (China’s economy is collapsing). The COVID vaccines were a success; (they don’t stop infection, they don’t stop the spread, they cause fatal side effects, and they’re not even vaccines; they’re experimental gene-modification treatments). We have to fight the climate crisis; (there is no crisis and CO2 is a trace gas that has no discernible impact on global temperatures. The dominant climate factors are water vapor, ocean currents, solar cycles and volcanoes).
The list goes on, but you get the idea.
The elites stick with their fantasies, while the rest of us have to deal with the real world the best we can. No one does a better job of pointing out these absurdities and explaining their high costs than Victor Davis Hanson. Here’s his latest column explaining the elite flight from reality and how it impacts everyday Americans.
Of course, VDH (as he is known to his friends) is not just another opinion columnist. He’s a distinguished historian who has written over twenty books on everything from Plato to Donald Trump. He’s an expert on ancient civilizations and the causes of decline in all civilizations.
In this article, VDH does more than just critique the elite fantasy world. He explains how civilizations have gone through such periods in the past and how it almost always indicates a decadent stage leading to collapse. VDH has some advice for readers also. We need to end the madness with our votes for more sensible politicians of all parties. If we don’t, we’ll end up like the Romans waiting for the Barbarians to take over.
