Even Democrats Oppose Biden Sending Child-Killer Bombs to Ukraine

What’s a cluster bomb? It’s a bomb that contains hundreds of smaller bombs. It can come in a form that’s dropped by a plane or drone. It can also come in the form of an artillery shell that can be fired from a 155mm gun.

The idea is that when the cluster bomb or shell strikes, it spreads the bomblets inside, and they explode separately. This creates more shrapnel, has a wider impact, and causes more deaths on the ground. They are considered effective against advancing light infantry (because they lack armor protection) and against defenders in dug-in positions in trenches (because they’re packed tightly together and can’t flee easily when a bombardment begins).

It’s a nasty weapon in combat, but it does something else. It kills and maims children.

This happens because many of the cluster bombs are duds. They hit targets and disperse the bomblets, but they don’t explode. Instead, the bomblets spread out on the ground.

Months and even years later when combat ends, villagers and townspeople return to their homes. Children find the bomblets and think they’re toys or novelties and start playing with them. A certain number detonate based on the kids tossing them around. The children are then killed or maimed for life.

An international treaty was created to ban the manufacture or use of cluster bombs for this reason. Hundreds of nations have signed the treaty, including many U.S. allies and NATO members. The U.S. has not signed the treaty. In fact, the U.S. is now sending cluster bombs to Ukraine for their use against Russian troops.

This decision by Joe Biden has caused outrage even among progressive Democrats who usually support Biden’s dumbest ideas. In time, children will be killed and maimed as a result. But the story has two other facets that make it even worse.

This decision was not entirely gratuitous. It results from the fact that the U.S. and NATO have essentially depleted their supplies of regular 155mm munitions and are unable to gear up the defense industry to make more anytime soon.

That’s a reflection of the fact that the U.S. war plan of “draining” Russia has completely backfired. Instead, Russia has put its entire economy on a war footing and is manufacturing ample weapons and ammunition. It is the U.S. that has been drained and we are unready for conflicts elsewhere in the world, let along defending Ukraine. We’re sending cluster bombs because that’s all we have left.

The other facet is that the gloves are now off. Once Ukraine uses the cluster bombs, Russia will have no compunction about doing the same. Ukraine will suffer even greater casualties and will lose the war even sooner than now expected.
