The U.S. And NATO Just Took Another Step Toward Nuclear War
Taken in isolation, it does not seem that unusual. There’s a war going on between Russia and Ukraine. Russia has pushed deep within Ukrainian territory and has annexed large parts of it into newly formed Russian republics. There’s no reason Ukraine would not strike back any way they could, including inside Russia itself.
But that simple analysis does not offer full context. This attack should be seen as the latest in a long line of escalatory steps taken by Russia and Ukraine and its allies including the EU, the UK and the United States.
The U.S. provoked the war beginning with the Bush declaration in 2008 that Ukraine and Georgia should join NATO and continuing with the Obama coup d’état in 2014 that replaced a duly elected pro-Russian President with a U.S. puppet. Russia responded by invading Georgia in 2008, annexing Crimea in 2014, and finally invading the Donbas region of Ukraine in 2022.
From there, the escalation has continued with the U.S./UK sabotage of the Nord Stream pipelines, the attack on the Kerch bridge that connects Russia to Crimea, the Russian attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure and more. The U.S. has supplied Ukraine with drones, satellite intelligence, heavy long-range artillery, and now Patriot anti-missile batteries.
Russia is preparing for a winter offensive and has threatened to use hypersonic missiles to destroy U.S. weapons systems given to Ukraine. In this context, the Ukrainian attack on an air base in Russia that happened to contain nuclear weapons is not routine; it’s a reckless escalation.
Biden has shown no signs of relenting and recently said he will supply Ukraine with weapons as long as it takes. Putin will also not back down and seems determined to secure the entire seacoast of Ukraine, including the critical port of Odesa.
At this point, Russia and the U.S. are on an escalatory path that can only end in nuclear war unless one side or the other finds a way to de-escalate. This path to nuclear war has been warned about since the 1950s. It was played out in the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962. In that case, Kennedy and Khrushchev did find a way to de-escalate before it was too late.
Biden seems like the chief culprit here because the U.S. has so few vital interests in Ukraine. Biden and warmongers like Victoria Nuland and Tony Blinken are determined to use the war as a way to overthrow Putin. They will not succeed in that; it’s delusional. But they may succeed in starting World War III.
